Photos from Jamaica
What day is it? Friday!? Less than a week to go...too much to do and a lot of fun!
The kids went to Jamaica's premiere water park, Kool Runnings near downtown and the strip of resorts at the seven mile beach. (The name is a relate to the Jamaican Bob sled team and the movie of the same name) Read more inside...
Das Blog! Friday has come and we’re looking at less than a week in the island of Jamaica. Today was a super fun day for the kids and their Jamaican counterparts. Most of this blog will be penned by our guest writer for the evening, Ms. Z. She attended the water park outing to Kool Runnings with the group while I took a day off to “zen out:” --------------------------------------- Words of Z After a leisurely morning, the Tyee part of the team packed into several shuttles and made our way down to the Kool Runnings Water Park, where we met up with the rest of the team-our Sheffield friends. While waiting in the long line to get into the park, the Tyee part of the team grilled their “teachers-“ the Sheffield students- on how to phrase several basic questions and/or greetings in Patois, an assignment discussed at the previous night’s meeting. The Sheffield students were quite amused, but took up the task of helping their counterparts out with the language. This assignment is particularly important because tomorrow, the whole team-Sheffield and Tyee- will be visiting the market at Savannah-La-Mar, the capitol of the parish of West Moreland. The students will be expected to try and use their new-found language skills at the market. Upon entering the park, the whole got down to business, bathing suits and all. For the next 5 hours, it was all water-slide all the time. Sydney found herself on the Kool Runnings DJ stage involved in a hool-a- hoop contest. During the contest, Sydney’s effort was nullified due to a defective hool-a-hoop. Her disqualification was undeserved, yet she graciously conceded her spot and left the stage aplomb. I found myself, having sworn never to go on a slide, in line for virtually every slide in the park. This feat can only be attributed to the resilient and determined nature of Nick Taylor, who rallied me to no end. Sun burns and all, the whole team left the park happy, although a bit tired. ----------------------------------- While the group did their thing down at the water park, I explored the area a little, starting with some time at the resort and then a long walk up and down the road. While Jeremy did similar actions yesterday, it sounds like his walk was more “eventful” than mine. Perhaps the locals are starting to get to know me and realize I am with the kids from Sheffield. We do get a lot of recognition in the community with the ground work that James has laid. Many of the locals consider themselves part of the family and are willing to help out in any way for our project. While most people come to Jamaica on vacation and don’t really give back to the area, I was reflecting on this with James the other night in regards to what we have done. As I saw a couple riding a bus to some destination, I made a comment that I think is reflective of our project with the school. I could spend my money on a trip to Jamaica and be a tourist, do tourism activities, and stick to known areas, but what fun would that really be? What is a better use of resources? As I thought to myself, I realized it’s better to spend the same amount of money and do an educational outing that really gives back to the region and leaves a positive influence on the youth and locals in the area. Instead of our group being known as the “tourists from America” we’re known as “Mr. Burke’s group” or the “teachers at Sheffield” which is so much more fulfilling.
I heard it was nearly 92 up there in the Northwest, but our temp remained high 80's and super high humidity with some thunderstorms rolling through today.
Peace, and yes, we miss you all...
PS - tonight's video blog entry by our Fantastic Four group... Very few photos of the water park as mr. Manning didn't want to capture too much skin...some of the jamaican bathing suits are front runners for the Spors Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
