Market and beach, Plus one HUGE thunderstorm
We went to the market today and it was hot. Then we headed over to the beach for some swimming and time together.
| Less than a week to go, and we’re getting a ton of stuff done. This Saturday, July 4th (happy 4th back home) turned out to be one of the hottest (if not THE hottest) day of the trip so far. What better time to head to the market? In Sav where the streets are cement. There are tons of cars. The market is covered in tarps and the average temp was probably pushing 95 with super high humidity. I know it’s been hot back home, but it was unbelievable today.
We made our way to Sav (Savannah la Mar) via route taxis. We thought it would be a cool experience to take the route taxi from Negril to the Sav market to show our kids what the Jamaican kids go through just about every day when going to and from school. These taxis are fast and notorious for driving like crazy men. However, they have VERY few accidents on the main roads here in Jamaica, so I guess when everyone drives wild, it’s the norm. Our caravan pulled in around 11am to the Juici Patti, just a short 2 blocks from the market which is located right next to the sea. We walked through the market on a once over and got together towards the back of the market near the water line to talk about what we saw on the first pass. We also took some photos and rummaged through the conch shells that are discarded after the fisherman pull the conch’s out and sell them to the persons in the market. On our second pass, the kids were given instruction to use their counterparts as teachers in an attempt to use patois to communicate with the market sellers. They asked how much things cost, etc. See the video for Jerked Chicken’s examples. After we left the market, we had lunch at the Juici Patti. Beef, chicken or cheese! When lunch was completed, we headed over to Legends, on the beach, with our counterparts in tow. This time, everyone jumped into the water to get relief from the heat. While some kids chose to play in the sand…don’t ask me… the rest swam, and had chicken fights. During the entire afternoon, the largest thunderstorm I have ever witnessed began to brew just overheard. As we prepared to leave the resort back to Samsara, we were treated to the largest natural fireworks show I have ever seen. Lightning flashed over and over without a break. Thunder was shaking our surroundings, and rain poured in sheets. Morgan and Cassie decided to dance in the rain while everyone else stayed as dry as they could under the bus stop. The bus was a little late so Ellen became proactive and tracked down a taxi bus for about seven people. I went with them to help keep the group “safe” so to speak. Everyone ended up back at the Samsara safe and sound. While the storm continued to roll off shore. We had a huge lightning treat at dinner. Peter, the local who is building an eco-resort, joined James, Nate, Sarah and Bill for dinner. I sat with the kids to get some dirt. No dirt was spilled….sorry, parents. Tonight is our last night with Bill. He is heading home to go back to work. We will miss his efforts, however we are being supplemented by Van Roy and his wife(Marla) who just joined us from Long Beach, California. Tomorrow brings a visit to the eco resort with our counter parts. Happy 4th, see you Thursday!
