Photos from Jamaica
Sunday was not so fine, but the project moved forward.
Sunday brought sour stomachs, recycle center, high heat and a cool eco-resort. Sorry for the lack of blog but I was down....
| Sunday. A time when you are supposed to relax and enjoy life in Jamaica. Not for our group. Well, not relaxing at least. We still enjoyed our experience. There’s a reason we didn’t blog last night, and the closest I can come to an explanation is the term “Montezuma’s Revenge” for those of you who parlay south of the border. We had a tough time yesterday as many in the group became a little stomach ill.
As we powered through the day, it all started Sunday morning by heading out early to the recycling center; run by Peter Reid. He is a local who has pioneered a lot of the efforts in recycling the waste products here on the island. Just walking into the center, you can see that there are mountains of glass, plastic and card board. Peter gave a quick tour of the site and then showed us how he plans to recycle items like glass into drinking glasses, cigarette ash trays or other useful items. There are also plans to create plastic form 2x6’s from an extruder giving the island building materials made from 100% recycled plastic. These would then be used in building homes, decks and fences. On the side, Peter showed Sarah and our group’s Peter the new Merengui (sp) seed trees that have incredible amounts of healthy vitamins for your body. I believe the tree has a website called treeforlife.org We then split the group into several smaller groups and built solar powered cars. These cars were used in a quick make shift race next door at the scrub-a-dub. A car wash that moonlights as a party place during the weekend nights. Don’t ask. The races ended up in a win for Morgan and Cassie’s group. We were then off to lunch. Of all places…Burger King. Hey, we had to punt. By this time many had joined Juan in the upset stomach issues that plagued the group for the rest of the day. At BK, we had what was called the “BK Beat Down”. I kid of course, but the truth of the matter was that a local that is known to be a little off his rocker, tried to take Nick Weiss’ large drink. Right from his table. Some local guys immediately jumped in and grabbed the guy and got Nick’s drink back. They then “escorted” him out to the corner. They were very nice guys. Later, we almost ran this same guy down in the street as he was dancing just around the corner in front of our car and we had to swerve to miss him. After lunch we went up to the eco-resort being built by Earth Ship One. This is a resort that is designed to be completely green and sustainable. This resort uses many pieces of recycled items from the recycle center as well as self sustaining solar energy. Unfortunately, after I took some photos I was done for the day and lead myself to lay down and didn’t get much extra info. The day ended on a sour note for myself, but a positive for the group. Unfortunately Bill left in the morning, and we missed him, greatly. He had to get back to work. Oh, and one more funny story. We were in BK and ready to leave when Ellen blurted out “are we ready Mr. Jerk?” instead of mr. Burke, when we were getting ready to leave. So, of course, for the rest of the day, Burke was known as mr. Jerk. Peter |

I'm sorry to hear about the illness... nothing like being sick & not being in your own home.
Glad to hear everyone is feeling better today.
