Monday with the Acompong trip and a little detour to the Appleton Rum Estates

We have lots of pictures of Appleton Rum Estates and the Acompong Village, but no video tonight. Darn youtube was under maintenance.  Will post later.

Monday, and we’re feelin’ fine!

Everyone but Juan and Morgan were feeling much better than the night before.  And it was good timing because we left early after breakfast for a long, 3 hour bus ride through winding roads and lush jungles to the Appleton Rum Estates and then the Maroon Village.

There’s not much to say about the bus ride other than it was fairly quiet and we picked up most of the Jamaican students in Little London.

We reached the first destination after snaking around some roads and over some hills to the Appleton Rum Factory (estates).  This is a pristine estate located centrally on the island. The significance for our trip was based on the fact that the laborers at the factory were all slaves from Africa.  A fact that the tour does not mention and we were very pressed to get the truth from them. At least to admit their history.  Much of the tour is based on selling rum.  Yes, “mmm..delicious rum. “ They made it sound like you should put it on your cornflakes in the morning.  James tells me this was new this year and we had a laugh.

The adults did enjoy samples, myself included.  They had a very tasty rum punch that was a secret recipe.

The actual tour was short and highlited by a tasting of this molasses that was “red bull in a spoon” as our new found friends from Belgium put it.  (guy in yellow shirt on photo).

After the tour, we had lunch at the Happy Time restaurant at the cross roads to the Maroon village.

Then, straight up the hill to the village.  No AC as we had to get extra power for our already overloaded bus.

Upon arrival at the village we got a nice warm welcome, and split into 3 groups for touring. Our tour guides took us on a short ¾ mile trek around the village to see the areas used by Cudjo and his men to defend the village from the British.  We sat under the very tree the leaders did some 200 years or more ago.  They actually gained independence as a people nearly 30 years before America did.

There is more to the story, but I am not feeling well, Randy wants to go to bed and I have to sign off.

Good night!
